Three Four is a Magic Number

Birthday Girl

October 30th, 2005

Here's the scoop on Mira's birthday! When I initially started thinking about a party for her, I came up with a guest list of about 30 people. Not having lots of funds or energy, or available awake time, I decided to scale it back to a more reasonable amount of guests - Don and Amy and their new daughter Greta, and Don's parents Sue and Al.

Here's Mira opening one of her presents. I think she was more interested in the paper and bag than the cool ball inside, but oh well. We'll have fun teaching her kick ball when she's a little older. Right now we are working on rolling the ball to momma or papa. Much later on, I'm sure she'll play dodge ball with it as well.

We let Mira open her other presents as they arrived so as to not overwhelm her on her birthday. Mike and I sang to her when she woke up that morning and we had a nice quiet day, getting ready for dinner that night. Christmas will be another story, though I'm sure Mike will try to talk me into letting her (and him) open presents as they arrive. Nope, no way, don't even try to change my mind!

I should have made lots of food Mira could eat, but no. It was pizza and salad. Mike has a way with salad dressings and I must say my pizza crust is closing in on perfection. Here's a hint - let it rise a LONG time and you'll get a nice chewy, yet crisp crust. Pizza number one was Mike's favorite - pepperoni, mushrooms and olives. Pizza number two was prosciutto, goat cheese, capers, and caramelized red onions - YUM!

Dinner was a lot of fun, even though I don't think there was a moment when all of us were at the table at one time. Having children definitely adds a layer of complexity to just about everything. I think everyone but Al held Greta for a moment and when it was my turn, Mira let out a green tinged cry! Oh, she did not like to see me cuddle that baby!

And yes, I made a cake for my Sweetness. Just a white cake with a light chocolate frosting. I thought we were going to have cake all over the place. I spread a towel underneath her high chair so as to minimize the mess; however, she just daintily ate a little bit of the cake, didn't go crazy or anything! I can already hear my friend Rob - Well of course she didn't go nuts, you barely gave her a big enough piece!!

And here's a shot of her loot! I think I got everything in there! Thank you everyone who gave Mira a little something on her first birthday! She's having lots of fun with her new toys and looks sooo cute in her outfits! My only regret is that she didn't get to spend this day with more of her extended family.
